Foundation
Most people trying to eat healthier start by cutting things out. DASH works differently. This week, we're not removing anything. We're adding awareness. Specifically: we're going to start reading the back of the packet.
Sodium hides everywhere — bread, cereal, sauces, soup, anything in a tin or a packet. The average person consumes far more than they realize, not from a salt shaker but from processed food. This week's job is simply to notice. Read three food labels you've never read before. That's it. What you find will change how you shop — without anyone telling you what you can and can't eat.
Your one habit this week
Read the nutrition label on 3 foods you buy this week.
Look specifically at sodium per serving. You're not tracking or counting — just noticing. Awareness before action. This is how lasting change starts.
Recipe of the week
Lemon Herb Roasted Chicken Thighs with Sweet Potato
10 mins prep · 35 mins cook · serves 2
Ingredients
- 4 chicken thighs, skin on
- 1 large sweet potato, cubed
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 lemon, zested and juiced
- 2 teaspoons dried thyme or rosemary
- Black pepper (no added salt this time)
Steps
- Heat oven to 200°C. Toss sweet potato cubes with 1 tbsp olive oil and pepper on a baking tray.
- Rub chicken thighs with remaining olive oil, lemon zest, lemon juice, and herbs.
- Place chicken on the same tray alongside the sweet potato.
- Roast for 30–35 minutes until chicken skin is golden and juices run clear.
- Rest for 5 minutes before serving. Notice how satisfying this is without a pinch of added salt.
Movement this week
Focus: Walking for blood pressure
Research consistently shows that regular walking is one of the most effective non-pharmaceutical ways to lower blood pressure. This week: one 20-minute walk per day. The time of day doesn't matter. After dinner is ideal — it also helps regulate blood sugar after meals.
- • 20-minute walk once per day, any time
- • Walk after at least one meal this week
- • Take the long route — stairs, far parking spot, one extra block
Supplement of the week
Magnesium Glycinate
Magnesium is a key mineral in the DASH framework — most people don't get enough from food alone. It supports normal blood pressure, muscle function, and sleep quality. Glycinate is the gentlest form on the stomach. 300–400mg before bed is a good starting point.
